The Boys and Girls Club of Walworth County Advisory Council is pleased to announce the hiring of Karin Slayton as unit director. Slayton, a Fontana resident, comes to the job with a passion for working with young people and their families, and experience building relationships with educators and with community and business leaders. She’s looking forward to opening the club’s doors for area boys and girls this fall at Phoenix Middle School in Delavan.
“I am so excited to be a part of such an amazing organization as the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County,” Slayton said. “There is such a need for safe, quality after-school programming for kids in Delavan and across Walworth County. Phoenix Middle School is a perfect location to open our first site, and we thank them and the Delavan-Darien School District for partnering with us.”
Slayton most recently was the recreation supervisor with the Delavan Parks and Recreation Department, and office coordinator for the Geneva Lake Conservancy, where she worked on fundraising events.
Before that, she served with the YMCA of Metro Milwaukee as program director and senior director. Among her YMCA responsibilities were developing programs for the club’s branches, managing after-school programs at Milwaukee Public Schools sites, and working with families and social service agencies. She also worked in staff development, and wrote and managed grants.
Slayton, who holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from New Mexico State University, has already been meeting with community education and business members, outlining the club’s goals, preparing for club’s opening, and promoting fundraising events.
“We hope the community will come out and see the site when it opens, and support our Sept. 28 golf outing at Delbrook,” she said.
Slayton will also be meeting and greeting students and their families during Delavan-Darien School District registration on August 6 at the high school.
