Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and First Lady Tonette Walker were special guests at a breakfast fundraiser Tuesday, Oct. 23, to support the creation of a Boys & Girls Club in Walworth County.
About 50 people attended the event at Lake Lawn Resort. Both Gov. Walker and First Lady Walker spoke in support of starting a club.
“The Boys & Girls Club offers one more opportunity for kids to participate and get the strong character building and leadership skills that a lot of kids they just aren’t going to get anywhere else,” Gov. Walker said.
He mentioned the tremendous need for such a club in the county, where approximately a third of kids are part of economically-disadvantaged families, and specifically the Delavan-Darien area, where about two-thirds of kids are economically disadvantaged.
“The Boys & Girls Club can make a tremendous, tremendous difference,” here, Gov. Walker said.
Also at the event, Club organizers unveiled a surprise for the Walkers and those in attendance. Once the Club opens its doors — slated for Winter 2013 — it will be called the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County, Gov. Scott Walker Chapter.
A special banner was presented at the breakfast event with the Club’s logo and new chapter title.
CLUB STATUS UPDATE:
In early October, Club officials presented a proposal to the Delavan-Darien School District about having the district provide an initial location for the Club.
The likely spot would be the centrally-located Phoenix Middle School, which is in walking distance from Delavan-Darien High School, Turtle Creek Elementary School and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with School.
Club officials and members of the Delavan-Darien School Board and administrative staff are in preliminary discussions about this option and are working on details to see if they can make it happen. Stay tuned for more.
