Boys & Girls Club has much to be thankful for in 2013

photo-3

As this busy, exciting year draws to a close,  we would like to thank club supporters for helping us realize our goal of opening the doors of the first Boys and Girls Club of Walworth County!

The club opened Oct. 15th at Phoenix Middle School in Delavan, with more than 90 members. The investment by businesses, community organizations and individuals in the young people of our community is greatly appreciated!

Special thanks to the Delavan-Darien School District and the staff at Phoenix Middle School for the space and support.

Because of the high poverty rate in our community, we offer the program to our kids for just $10 per school year. We rely on the support of community members like you so we can continue to provide:

  • Academic assistance and homework help daily
  • Healthy snacks
  • Physical activity in the form of sports, fitness, and games
  • Eight staff-led activities per day, including art, writing, cooking, crafts,  computers and technology, and more.

With true community spirit, our members organized care packages for U.S. troops and wrote them personal letters. They made beaded holiday bracelets for the residents of Willowfield Nursing and Rehabilitation in Delavan.

DSC04443On Nov. 5, they had the opportunity to meet Gov. Scott Walker, who grew up in Delavan, and his wife, Tonette, when the Walkers joined club supporters and community members at our Grand Opening celebration. We thank the Walkers for helping raise awareness about  the club.

We are blessed to have such wonderful support from area businesses, community organizations and individuals, and from numerous volunteers who have donated their time and talents to make our fundraisers a success. Special thanks to all those who bought gifts for our club Christmas party.

We are hopeful that with continued generous contributions such as yours, we will be able to continue serving youth in our community for many years to come!

Happy Holidays!

Karin Slayton hired as unit director for Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County

The Boys and Girls Club of Walworth County Advisory Council is pleased to announce the hiring of Karin Slayton as unit director. Slayton, a Fontana resident, comes to the job with a passion for working with young people and their families,  and experience building relationships with educators and with community and business leaders. She’s looking forward to opening the club’s doors for area boys and girls this fall at Phoenix Middle School in Delavan.

“I am so excited to be a part of such an amazing organization as the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County,” Slayton said. “There is such a need for safe, quality after-school programming for kids in Delavan and across Walworth County. Phoenix Middle School is a perfect location to open our first site, and we thank them and the Delavan-Darien School District for partnering with us.”

Slayton most recently was the recreation supervisor with the Delavan Parks and Recreation Department, and office coordinator for the Geneva Lake Conservancy, where she worked on fundraising events.

Before that, she served with the YMCA of Metro Milwaukee as program director and senior director. Among her YMCA responsibilities were developing programs for the club’s branches, managing after-school programs at Milwaukee Public Schools sites, and working with families and social service agencies. She also worked in staff development, and wrote and managed grants.

Slayton, who holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from New Mexico State University, has already been meeting with community education and business members, outlining the club’s goals, preparing for club’s opening, and promoting fundraising events.

“We hope the community will come out and see the site when it opens, and support our Sept. 28 golf outing at Delbrook,” she said.

Slayton will also be meeting and greeting students and their families during Delavan-Darien School District registration on August 6 at the high school.

Governor Walker, First Lady show support for Club’s creation

Walker BGC Fundraiser

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and First Lady Tonette Walker were special guests at a breakfast fundraiser Tuesday, Oct. 23, to support the creation of a Boys & Girls Club in Walworth County.

About 50 people attended the event at Lake Lawn Resort. Both Gov. Walker and First Lady Walker spoke in support of starting a club.

“The Boys & Girls Club offers one more opportunity for kids to participate and get the strong character building and leadership skills that a lot of kids they just aren’t going to get anywhere else,” Gov. Walker said.

He mentioned the tremendous need for such a club in the county, where approximately a third of kids are part of economically-disadvantaged families, and specifically the Delavan-Darien area, where about two-thirds of kids are economically disadvantaged.

“The Boys & Girls Club can make a tremendous, tremendous difference,” here, Gov. Walker said.

Also at the event, Club organizers unveiled a surprise for the Walkers and those in attendance. Once the Club opens its doors — slated for Winter 2013 — it will be called the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County, Gov. Scott Walker Chapter.

A special banner was presented at the breakfast event with the Club’s logo and new chapter title.

CLUB STATUS UPDATE:

In early October, Club officials presented a proposal to the Delavan-Darien School District about having the district provide an initial location for the Club.

The likely spot would be the centrally-located Phoenix Middle School, which is in walking distance from Delavan-Darien High School, Turtle Creek Elementary School and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with School.

Club officials and members of the Delavan-Darien School Board and administrative staff are in preliminary discussions about this option and are working on details to see if they can make it happen. Stay tuned for more.
